And naturally, the game has microtransactions in the form of vending machine tickets you can buy (though you can earn small amounts in game as well). It took too long to get chips to catch Mortys on a consistent basis, but that starts getting easier later. A few things bother me, like how once you enter a portal the only way to leave is to kill the Rick or pass out from losing all your Mortys, creating weird situations where you should commit suicide on purpose rather than be forced to burn all your supplies. The game is simplistic, but funny and mechanically sound. With limited Mortys, items, elements and objectives, it’s easy for pretty much anyone to jump in and play, and discover the joy of training and battling Mortys (ie. Pocket Mortys is fun for both its humor (the whole concept is amazingly ridiculous, mirroring the appeal of the show, I suppose) and its surprising effectiveness at creating a stripped down version of Pokémon for mobile devices. Beat them all, and you win and get your portal gun back. Get enough badges, and you’ll battle a member of the Council of Ricks. After beating this parallel universe Rick with a stronger collection of Mortys, you’ll get a badge.

There, you’ll navigate a maze of other Morty trainers (characters from the show) and ultimately have to find the Rick in the area. The game has you roaming around town where you can heal your Mortys, get a few small-scale quests (give someone X item you find in the wild for a better item in return) and enter a portal which will take you to a Morty battling dimension. One Cat Morty becomes Two Cat Morty, Scruffy Morty becomes Dishelved Morty, and so on. Once you start catching enough Mortys to double up on your collection, many of them can be “combined” in Morty day care to create stronger, evolved versions.

Your original Morty seems to be the only one free of an elemental type, meaning he’s a good all-purpose go-to. There’s a relatively simplistic Rock, Paper, Scissors “elemental” type system that makes it very clear what type of Morty is good against another type. In addition to Regular Morty, who will likely be on your team at all times, there’s Scruffy Morty, Fork Morty, Blue Shirt Morty, Aqua Morty, Buff Morty, Double Morty (who has two heads), Self-Defense Morty, Tiny Morty, and my powerhouse, Mewtwo-like find, Psychokinectic Morty, and about 70 more besides those. There are about 80 types of Mortys out there, and in a few hours of play, I’ve captured 20 and seen about 40 of them. In case it isn’t obvious, the Mortys are the Pokémon of this world, and your goal is to catch ‘em all.
